Pre-Energization (Before DC Switchon)
- Visual inspection: modules free of damage, junction boxes sealed, frame continuity
- Module serial number verification: 100% match to flash test report + BOM
- Polarity check at every string (+ve to +ve, -ve to -ve, no reversals)
- Insulation resistance (megger) test: DC cables ≥ 1 MΩ per IEC 62446
- Ground continuity test: all module frames bonded, resistance < 0.1 Ω
- Torque verification: random 10% sample of junction box + rail bolts
- String open-circuit voltage measurement: VOC per string within spec tolerance ±3%
- Inverter DC breaker OFF, AC breaker OFF before any connections
DC Commissioning
- Confirm shade-free condition (10:00-14:00 for best measurement)
- String by string VOC measurement + compare to expected (stringing calculator)
- Short-circuit current (ISC) measurement per string: within ±5% spec tolerance
- I-V curve trace per string (Solmetric PVA-1000 or equivalent): compare curve shape
- Identify underperforming strings: investigate before inverter commissioning
- Ground fault detection: monitor DC ground fault during energization
- Combiner box current balance: each string balanced within ±3% of array average
Inverter Commissioning
- Grid voltage + frequency measurement: within inverter operating window
- Inverter parameter settings per local utility code (VDE, UL 1741, AS 4777, etc.)
- Anti-islanding protection test
- Frequency + voltage ride-through test (grid-code dependent)
- Reactive power capability test (if utility requires)
- MPPT tracking verification: operating at expected DC voltage + current
- Communication/monitoring check: inverter reporting to monitoring platform
AC + Grid Handshake
- AC cable continuity + insulation test
- Transformer (if LV→MV) pre-energization test: no-load voltage correct
- Phase rotation check at PCC (Point of Common Coupling)
- Utility approval / witness test: as required by grid operator
- First synchronization: monitor voltage swing, frequency stability
- Load test: step loading from 10% → 50% → 100% monitoring voltage regulation
- Power quality measurement: THD < 5%, PF > 0.95 per string (IEC 61000-4-30)
Performance + Handover
- 24-hour continuous operation test: no trips, no anomalies
- Performance Ratio (PR) measurement at pyranometer-STC-normalized conditions
- String-level performance vs array average: flag any string >5% below average
- Infrared (IR) thermal scan: module temperature map + hotspot detection
- EL (electroluminescence) test: sample or 100% of modules per contract
- SCADA/monitoring system acceptance test: data flowing to owner dashboard
- Documentation handover: as-built drawings, test reports, O&M manual, warranty certificates
- Training session: owner's team on system operation + fault response
Why This Matters
Poor commissioning = Year-1 performance loss of 3-8% that's never recovered. Worse: latent issues (loose connections, ground faults, wrong polarity) show up as failures in Years 2-5 — already out of EPC's 12-month warranty. This checklist is based on IEC 62446 (the international PV commissioning standard) plus 10+ years of field experience. Every bullet is a tested failure mode we've seen.
